If you’re like a lot of creators, when you shooting your videos, you’ve got to make sure you take some still images to use in your thumbnails, too. Dane has his clients do it a different way, in that he has them do a photo shoot where they imagine having different emotions, which makes them have different facial expressions, like fear, anger, joy, disgust, surprise, curiosity and regret. He’s got 60 questions that are designed to elicit these emotions. He then takes these images and has several choices to choose from when creating thumbnails for his clients. Today, Dane and Gwen do something different. They try to make these faces.

Gwen Miller:
“This is something we’ve talked about for years in YouTube strategy, right? Where you need to have thumbnails that communicate emotion. You need, you need thumbnails that look like they’re action, just why all these shots we have that get you to open your mouth are so powerful because that kind of indicates action, motion. There’s something happening here that I’m going to click in. This is also why we encourage not to do posey-posey headshots.”
